The Dude Abides

* Why is it that we can put a man on the moon but we still can't stop a zoo smelling like shit? Priorities, people.

* I'm never going to wear my Eagles Farewell Tour concert T-shirt. Let's face it. I get laughed at for wearing it at band practice for chrissake. I have no problem wearing my Bowie T-shirt to 3D World, or my Yes T-shirt to the V Festival, or my Radiohead "We Suck Young Blood" T-shirt to after school care... but there's just something about The Eagles that is faintly -- no, not faintly -- immensely embarrassing. Is it Don Henley's solo career? Perhaps. The WS FM-friendly AND overt sentimentality of the track Desperado and New Kid In Town? Probably.

I'm just annoyed they weren't selling concert shirts at the David Gates concert. A black T-shirt with "BABY I'M A WANT YOU" on it in big letters? Awesome.

* How good is Anna Nicole Smith's diary? "Well found out I was P.G. [pregnant?] today on Clays BDay Im in shock Im so scared! How can this happen to me. Clay will hate me he dont want kid Cant do it!" ("Cant do it!" is underlined) The collected letters of Oscar Wilde? Fuck off, this is real insight into character.

Interestingly - critics in the 70's tried to lump Steely Dan with The (fucking) Eagles together.

Steely Dan 'complimented' them and referred to them as 'The White Drifters' while Glenn Frey's line in 'Hotel California' - 'They stab it with their steely knives' is a returned 'compliment' because they liked the way Steely Dan would say anything in a song.

The Eagles is just not cool, I don't care how good some of their songs are.

Myeah...

Big up for the Lebowski reference.

Viva la Spam bot.

So much Eagles hate... though I would change the end of Doolin Dalton/Desperado meldly to a slow drawn out 'your prison is walking through this world all alone' instead of just repeating 'desperado' over and over again.

You don't know what i'm talking about.

Yeah I do but it's a fucking stupid idea.

Guy at work has a T-shirt with "The Dude Abides" on it over a silhouette of bowling pins. Awesome.

I'm really into T-shirts lately.

Jackie: That's a compliment? What, they use a word from the name of the band in a lyric?

Anyway I agree: the Eagles is just not cool.

The Eagles didn't return the "compliment" because they "liked the way Steely Dan would say anything in a song"...

On a track from The Royal Scam, one of the lyrics runs, "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbours are listening." Becker and Fagen were, I'm sure, making some snide comment about suburbia and their acceptance of music like the Eagles, but Henley and Co., bless their hearts, took 'em at face value.

Hence, the reciprocal mention.

Steely Dan didn't like the Eagles - the remarks they made were coated with their usual sense of irony. The critics compared them because they were, as Becker and Fagen put it, started at the same time and were 'all white guys that sang in 3 part harmonies'. Even though the Eagles sold about 100 times better than the Dan - it's a running joke between Fagen and Becker.

I'm not convined that the Eagles took it at face value - 'the way they would say anything in a song' is a snide remark...and 'compliment' was used sarcastically. Sorry i didn't make that clearer...

The fucking eagles themselves are cool, though I'm sure most people who like them (for the singles) are idiots hence the street rep.

'Hey, 2WS played 'one of these nights' last night when we were making the fuck. This is gon be our song baby.'

I'm serious about the end of desperado, if I could change one thing in the universe it would be that. I cringe everytime I hear it.

If I could change one thing in the universe, it'd be to make the use of the definite article before "fuck" mandatory. It just sounds so much better.

By the way, where did that come from? "Making fuck" is from a Kevin Smith film, right? Who was the genius who added the "the"?

PS. In my manuscript, I have the phrase "making the boogie" (referring to the same thing), and that particular paragraph would have a date of 2001.

Clerks had 'Would you like be making fuck'. Not to toot my own horn but I think Logjammin was the first use of 'let's go make the fuck'.
Toot.
Of course 'let's go make-a da fuck' is even funnier.

The line 'make with the love' is also from a Kevin Smith movie.

I'll have the shirt if you don't wanna wear it.

You can't tell me that "New York Minute" isn't pure genius. Dare you spurn the Henley! Flaming herpes upon all your houses!

Because if it was good enough for Aaron Sorkin to name an episode of the West Wing after its lyrics, then it's okay with me.
